By the time they arrived at the winding, unpaved road that led to the cabin, it was nearly midnight.

“It’s really dark out here,” commented Joanna, as the minivan’s lights slit the inky darkness. “How long until your cabin?”

“It’s actually not too far from here, but I have to go slow. A lot of wildlife comes out at night.”

That was something Joanna hadn’t considered. “Like?”

“Deer, wild boar, skunks, coyotes.”

“Walking around at night?”

Tony laughed. “Yes, and sometimes running. What did you think they’d be doing?”

Joanna peered out her side window into the night and shifted in her seat uncomfortably.

“You’ll be okay. As long as the gang that stormed my house left the door on, that is.”

“You might not have a door?”

“Relax. I’m sure if they did take it off the hinges that Heriberto put it back on. I told him that if I ever disappeared or something happened to me to watch over things. And if I was gone for more than a month, to call you with some instructions.”

“Me?”

Tony slowed to a crawl, waiting to see what a deer on the side of the road would do. Once it looked like she was going to stay put, he passed the animal. “Yeah, you. Who else would I have him call? My mom isn’t getting around too good these days, so I doubt she could make it out here to get my important stuff.”

“I didn’t know you had important stuff. I never knew you to save much.”

“I don’t, but there are some things that are important to me.”

“Like what?”

“My dad’s Purple Heart, for one. My mom gave it to me when I turned eighteen.”

This was something Joanna didn’t know that Tony had, and it was so important.

“You’re quiet.”

“I had no idea you had your dad’s medal. Why didn’t you tell me?”

Tony shrugged. “It never came up. You would have found out, anyway.”

“Yeah, when you were dead or missing.”

Tony let out a big sigh. “Forget I mentioned it. I’ll give it to Jesse or something.”

“No, that’s okay. I want it. I mean—. If something were to happen to you, it’d be an honor to have it.”

“I don’t know how your dentist friend would feel about that.” Tony braked the car as the cabin came into focus in the car’s headlights. “Say hello to my secret hideaway.”
